Shopify Bundles app: its limits, and when another app fits

Updated · SMART Bundles App & Upsells (E-TRADE PARTNER)

Shopify Bundles is Shopify's free app for fixed bundles and multipacks. It creates real bundle products whose stock comes from their components, but it doesn't do mix-and-match bundles, subscriptions or pre-orders, bundles inside bundles, or import and export, and a fixed bundle holds up to 30 components. If you'd rather show offers on your existing product pages than create bundle products, a discount-based app like SMART Bundles fits; it doesn't create bundle products or track bundle inventory.

SMART Bundles App & Upsells is a free Shopify app for bundles, quantity breaks, free gifts and upsells.

What Shopify Bundles does

  • It's a free first-party app, available on all Shopify plans, for creating fixed product bundles and multipacks in your Shopify admin (Shopify Bundles).
  • Each bundle is a product. You create the component products first; a new bundle starts as Draft until you set it to Active.
  • Bundle stock comes from the components: Shopify divides each component's available stock by the quantity per bundle and takes the lowest result, rounded down. Components that aren't tracked, or that keep selling when out of stock, are left out of the count (Eligibility and considerations).
  • Bundles can be sold on the Online Store, Shop and Shopify POS sales channels, and on headless storefronts (Shopify Bundles).
  • Bundles take discount codes and automatic discounts. A discount aimed at specific products must include the parent bundle product; picking only the components doesn't discount the bundle.
  • In the checkout order summary, order notifications and abandoned checkouts, a bundle shows as a nested group: the bundle title and price, then each item and its quantity (Eligibility and considerations).

The limits Shopify lists

AreaWhat Shopify's pages say
ComponentsUp to 30 per fixed bundle, and up to 2,000 units per component
Options and variantsAt most 3 options and 100 variants per bundle
Mix and matchThe Shopify Bundles app doesn't support mix-and-match bundles
Purchase optionsNot compatible with subscriptions, pre-orders or try before you buy, or with the Shopify Subscriptions app
NestingA bundle can't contain another bundle
Bulk workNo import, export or bulk editing of bundles
Custom productsNot compatible
ExchangesBundles can't be used in exchanges, even for an identical bundle
InventoryTracked as overall stock, not by location
Price changesWhen a component's price changes, the bundle price doesn't update; you change it by hand
Component SKUsIf a component's SKU changes, you delete and recreate the bundle
ShippingNo shipping profile of its own; rates come from the components' profiles, and weight from the components
Search and DiscoveryBundled products don't appear under option filters
ReturnsA bundle can't be marked final sale; its return eligibility follows its components
CheckoutThe store needs the upgraded checkout; checkout.liquid customizations are incompatible. Draft orders might default to an older checkout that doesn't support bundles

Numbers you'll see elsewhere

Articles about Shopify Bundles quote different caps. The figures above are the ones on Shopify's own pages on the date shown. Those pages also list Shopify POS as a supported sales channel.

When Shopify Bundles is the right tool

  • You want the bundle to be its own product, with its own page, price and place in collections.
  • You need stock calculated from the components, and nested bundle lines in orders for picking and packing.
  • You sell a fixed set or a multipack, on the Online Store, Shop, POS or a headless storefront.
  • You don't need subscriptions, pre-orders or mix and match on those bundles.

When a discount-based bundle app fits

A discount-based app doesn't create new products. Shoppers buy your normal products, the app shows the offer on the product page, and Shopify applies a discount in the cart and at checkout. That fits when:

  • You want quantity breaks on one product ("Buy 2, save 10%") without a multipack product per quantity.
  • You want mix and match: any 2, 3 or 4 products from a collection at a tiered price.
  • You want Buy X, get Y on the same product, or free gifts added to the cart for the shopper.
  • The products sell as subscriptions: the widget can offer Subscribe and save using the product's own selling plans.
  • You want extras on the product page: upsell add-ons, a gift ladder, a countdown.

The trade-off: no bundle product, no bundle SKU and no bundle inventory. Each product keeps its own stock and its own line in the order.

Set up a discount-based bundle in SMART Bundles

  1. Install the app. In Shopify admin it appears as SMART Discounts.
  2. Turn on the SMART Discounts app embed, listed as Deal widget under App embeds in the theme editor, and save the theme.
  3. Click Create new discount and pick a bundle template, for example Quantity breaks or Mix and match.
  4. On the Offers tab, set Show this bundle on to All products (the default), Products or Collections, then edit the offers.
  5. On the Settings tab, check Active dates, Eligibility and Combines with.
  6. Click Create. The bundle goes live right away (a future start date makes it Scheduled), the widget appears above the theme's Add to cart button, and Shopify applies the discount when the cart qualifies.

More on each offer type: Mix and match, Complete the bundle, Quantity breaks. For mix and match without bundle products, see Mix and match bundles on Shopify.
