How do I set up an Order goal discount (spend $X, get Y off)?
Updated · SMART Bundles App & Upsells (E-TRADE PARTNER)
Pick Order goal under Other discount types, add Tiers with a Required amount and a Percentage off or Amount off, and optionally list Products excluded from discount. When the items that count reach a tier, the highest tier reached comes off the order in the cart and at checkout.

Step by step
- In SMART Discounts, click Create new discount and pick Order goal under Other discount types.
- Enter a Discount name and choose Automatic or Code under Application method.
- In Tiers > Tier #1, enter the Required amount in your store currency, a Discount label (automatic only; code discounts show the code at checkout), the Discount type (Percentage off or Amount off) and the Discount value. Click Add tier for more, up to 10.
- Optional: under Products excluded from discount ("These products will be excluded from the discount when calculating it."), set Any items from and pick the items to leave out. Left empty, nothing is excluded.
- Check Purchase types, Combines with, Eligibility, Active dates and the Conditions card in the right column, then click Create.
How the discount is calculated
- The goal adds up the cart's items except the excluded ones, at their prices before other discounts. Shopify's discount functions run at the same time and don't see each other (Shopify developer docs).
- So a bundle's free or reduced units count at full price, and a free gift line counts at its full price too. To keep the gift out of the goal, add the gift product to Products excluded from discount.
- Only one tier applies: the highest tier the cart reaches.
- Percentage off comes off the items that count. Amount off takes that amount off the order.
- Excluded products don't count toward the goal and don't get the discount.
- Amounts are converted from your store currency at Shopify's rate for shoppers in other currencies.
Example
| Cart (items that count) | Tiers: $100 = 10% off, $200 = $30 off | Result |
|---|---|---|
| $80 | No tier reached | No discount |
| $150 | $100 tier | 10% off: $15 |
| $240 | $200 tier | $30 off |
Limits and edge cases
- Excluding everything: Any items from set to All products leaves nothing to count, so the discount never applies.
- No progress message. There's no progress bar or "spend $X more" message on the storefront. Announce the goal in your theme, for example in an announcement bar.
- Free shipping is a different type. Order goal takes money off the order, not off shipping. For free shipping over an amount, use a Shipping discount with Minimum order amount.
- Subscriptions. Applies on subscription purchases is off by default, and then a cart holding any subscription item gets no Order goal discount. Turn it on in Purchase types if you need it.
- Combining. An order discount combines with product discounts, such as bundles, only when both discounts allow it (Shopify Help Center). New Order goal discounts combine with product, order and shipping discounts by default. See Combine with other discounts.
- Who gets it: customer segments, markets, customer tags and countries. See Customer eligibility.
- For several rules in one discount, such as an order discount plus free shipping for one product group, use an Advanced discount.

›Does the goal use the price after a bundle discount?
No. The goal counts prices before other discounts, so a bundle's discounted units count at full price. Exclude those products if they shouldn't count.
›Can I show customers how much more they need to spend?
Not with Order goal. It has no progress bar or "spend $X more" message, so use your theme's announcement bar or a text block.
