How do bundles combine with other discounts and discount codes?

Two discounts apply together only when both allow it in their combination settings. New bundles combine with product, order and shipping discounts by default. Even then, outside Shopify Plus an item gets only one product discount, so a bundle and another product discount can't stack on the same item.

Where the setting is
- Bundles: Settings tab > Combines with: Product discounts, Order discounts, Shipping discounts. All three are ticked for new bundles.
- Volume discount, Order goal, Buy X get Y, Advanced discount: the Combines with card, with the same three boxes, all ticked by default. The Shipping discount editor shows only Product discounts and Order discounts (both ticked), so it never combines with another shipping discount.
- Free gift: the Combinations card, all ticked by default.
- The other discount (a Shopify discount or another app's) needs its own combination setting turned on too. Shopify applies discounts together only when the setting on each one allows it (Shopify Help Center).
Shopify's rules

- When discounts can't combine, Shopify applies the best discount or combination for the customer's cart, automatic or code.
- A code that can't join the discounts already on the cart shows "Discount couldn't be used with your existing discounts".
- Customers can use up to 5 product or order discount codes and 1 shipping discount code on one order.
What this means for a bundle
- Every bundle offer is a product discount. A code for 10% off products won't add to the bundle price on the same items; Shopify keeps the better one. It can still discount other items in the cart.
- An order discount (for example an Order goal, or a code for 10% off the order) can apply on top of a bundle, if the bundle allows Order discounts, the order discount allows Product discounts, and your store is eligible.
- A bundle with a Free shipping step in Progressive gifts also counts as a shipping discount.
- Ticking Shipping discounts only allows a separate shipping discount to apply alongside. It doesn't make shipping free by itself.
- There is no priority setting in the app. SMART Bundles can't make a code beat a better automatic discount; Shopify decides.
- The app has no setting for the Shopify Plus tags that let two product discounts share an item.
Fixes for common cases
- Sale code and bundle on the same items: make the extra saving an order discount instead of a product discount, then tick Order discounts on the bundle and Product discounts on the order discount.
- You want discount A to win on some products: exclude those products from discount B, and let both combine with Product discounts. Each product then gets only the one you meant.
- A Free gift line gets taken by another discount: the app removes the gift instead of charging it. Exclude the gift product in the other discount. See Free gift not added to the cart.
- More than 25 automatic discounts: Shopify allows 25 active automatic discounts, app discounts included. Code discounts don't count toward that limit.

›A customer used a discount code and lost the bundle price. Why?
Both were product discounts on the same items. Outside Shopify Plus an item gets one product discount, and Shopify keeps the better one for the customer. Make the code an order discount if both should apply.
›Can I stop a code from combining with bundles?
Yes. Untick Product discounts (and Order discounts, if needed) under Combines with in the bundle, or turn off combining on the code.
