How to run tiered discounts and gifts after Shopify Scripts

Shopify Scripts are gone: editing and publishing new scripts stopped on April 15, 2026, and on June 30, 2026 Shopify deprecated Scripts and deactivated every script still published. Tiered pricing and gift rules now run as Shopify Functions, from a public app on any plan or a custom app on Shopify Plus. In SMART Bundles App & Upsells, Quantity breaks, Volume discount, Order goal and Free gift tiers are Function-based replacements for the common tiered and gift scripts.

What happened to Shopify Scripts

Shopify's pages don't all agree. The developer reference for the Liquid scripts object still shows an older sunset date, August 28, 2025, and tells you to migrate before it (Liquid objects: scripts). The Script Editor help page and the Scripts migration page both give June 30, 2026, matching the April 2026 changelog, and this guide uses those dates.

Some guides that still rank tell you to migrate before June 30, 2026. That date has passed too: if a tiered price or gift used to come from a script, it isn't running now.

Find out what your scripts did

1. In your Shopify admin, go to Apps > Script Editor.
2. In the banner, click Replace Shopify Scripts to open the Shopify Scripts customizations report.
3. Each section (such as product discounts, shipping and payment gateways) lists the scripts that were active before the deprecation, with recommended apps and links to the matching Function API tutorial. You can export the report as a CSV.

How Shopify Functions replace scripts

• Functions customize Shopify's backend logic. Shopify runs them itself at the right step; they're never called by URL (About Shopify Functions).
• Plans: stores on any plan can use public App Store apps that contain functions. Custom apps with Function APIs need Shopify Plus (About Shopify Functions).
• Discounts: one discount function can give savings in the product, order and shipping classes, and tiered discounts on products, orders and shipping are a listed use case (Discount Function API).
• They act like other discounts. App discounts count toward the 25 active automatic discounts (Automatic discounts) and use the same combination settings (Discount combinations).
• POS: Scripts didn't work with Shopify POS (Scripts limitations). Discounts from Discount Function apps can apply in POS (Discounts in Shopify POS).
• Gifts: Scripts couldn't add items to the cart (Scripts limitations), and Shopify's gift script example said it wouldn't add the "get" item (line item script examples). SMART's discounts price the cart in a Function; its Free gift adds the gift line with a storefront script on your theme.

Why the built-in column takes several discounts: each amount off discount has one value and one minimum (Amount off discounts), and when discounts can't combine, Shopify applies the best one for the cart (Discount combinations).

Quantity breaks (product page)

Offer cards such as Buy 1, Buy 2 save 10%, Buy 3 save 20%. The highest tier reached applies to every unit of that product, with its variants counted together. Tick Only full packs of N get the discount to discount whole packs only, or use Fixed total price for exact pack prices. Bundles are automatic only. See Quantity breaks on Shopify.

Volume discount (cart and checkout)

• Based on Product quantity or Product price, for Any items from products, variants, collections or all products, or everything "other than" a list.
• Up to 10 tiers in the editor, each Percentage off, Amount off per item or Fixed price per item. The highest tier reached applies.
• Group by all products, each product or each variant. Exclude products with compare at price (already on sale).
• Automatic or a code. Nothing shows on the product page. See Volume discounts.

Order goal (spend tiers)

An order discount in Tiers of Required amount, each Percentage off or Amount off, up to 10 tiers, with Products excluded from discount. Automatic or a code. See Order goal discounts.

Free gift tiers

Up to 5 tiers by Cart value or Items in cart (1 tier for a code). Higher tier replaces lower keeps only the top gift; untick it to add every reached tier's gift. See Free gift with purchase on Shopify.

Advanced discount (custom rules)

For scripts with several conditions: Product groups (by product, variant, collection, tag, SKU, selling plan, price and more, with operators including "matches regex"), conditions such as Customer tag, Country, Language or Postal code, and product, order and shipping actions in one discount. Moving one script, step by step

1. Open the customizations report and export it.
2. For each line item script, write down the rule: which products, which customers, the thresholds and values, and whether it used a code.
3. Pick the matching type from the table, create it in SMART Discounts (Create new discount), and give it the same thresholds.
4. For anything on the product page, turn on the app embed: theme editor > App embeds > Deal widget from SMART Discounts (Turn on the app embed).
5. Check Combines with on the new discount and on your other discounts. Both sides must allow it (Combine discounts on Shopify).
6. Test a real cart in your online store at each threshold. For POS, test at a POS Pro location.

Shipping and payment scripts

• Discounted shipping rates: the Shipping discount type covers percentage, amount off or fixed price on rates, by rate name or type, with an optional minimum order amount or quantity.
• Hiding payment or delivery options: Settings > Restrictions hides them only while a cart line already carries a discount. Other payment and delivery rules need a different Functions app, or a custom app on Shopify Plus.

Edge cases

• Spend tiers count prices before other discounts in Free gift and in a bundle's Progressive gifts.
• One tier at a time: Volume, Order goal and Quantity breaks apply the highest tier reached, never two tiers of the same discount.
• Stacking on one item: two product discounts on the same line item can combine only on Shopify Plus (Discount combinations).
• Customer tags and bundles: bundles have no tag or segment targeting. Use a cart discount type for tag-based tiers.
