How to switch bundle apps on Shopify without breaking your offers

List every offer the old app runs and sort it into bundle products or plain discounts, recreate the offers in SMART Bundles App & Upsells, and turn on its app embed (Deal widget). Then remove the old app's embed, blocks and leftover theme code, check discount combinations, test a real cart, and only then uninstall the old app.

Before you start

• Back up your theme. Shopify recommends a backup copy before you customize a theme: duplicate it from Online Store > Themes. A store can hold 20 themes, so you may need to delete one first (Duplicating themes).
• Keep the old app installed until the last step. Its offers keep selling while you rebuild.
• Pick a quiet time for the switch-over itself (steps 5 and 6), when few shoppers have carts open.

Step 1: List what the old app runs

• In the old app: every bundle, quantity break, gift, upsell and discount code, with its products, tiers, prices, dates, markets and any customer targeting. Screenshots of each offer and its storefront look help later.
• In Shopify admin > Discounts: discounts made by an app carry an app badge, shown when you hover over the discount (Discounts with apps). Note which ones are automatic: a store can have 25 active automatic discounts, app discounts included (Automatic discounts).
• In the theme editor: the old app's app embeds and app blocks, on product templates and anywhere else (homepage, landing pages, cart).
• In Products: any bundle products the old app created, with their SKUs, stock and the links, ads or collections that point to them.

Step 2: Sort offers into bundle products and discounts

Bundle apps work in one of two ways. Some create the bundle as its own product, with its own SKU and stock worked out from its components: Shopify's own bundles set availability by the component with the lowest inventory (Eligibility and considerations). Others keep products separate and discount them in the cart and at checkout.

SMART Bundles works the second way. It creates no bundle products and syncs no bundle inventory: each item stays its own product, SKU and cart line, and a Shopify discount Function prices the offer. So for each old offer, decide where it goes:

Step 3: Recreate the offers in SMART Bundles

1. Install SMART Bundles App & Upsells. In your Shopify admin it appears as SMART Discounts.
2. Click Create new discount and pick a template, for example Quantity breaks, Mix and match or Bundle with a free gift. See Create your first bundle.
3. On the Offers tab, set Show this bundle on to the same products or collections as the old offer, then add the tiers and prices.
4. Add extras on the Extras tab (progressive gifts, upsell add-ons, countdown timer, savings summary, subscriptions).
5. On the Settings tab, set Eligibility (markets, Exclude B2B, Exclude POS) and Combines with.
6. Match the look on the Design tab, with Custom CSS if needed.
7. Clicking Create makes a bundle live right away, so use Deactivate in the editor header on anything you aren't ready to show yet.

A product page shows one SMART bundle. If two of your bundles target the same product, the editor names the other one.

Step 4: Turn on the SMART Discounts app embed

1. Go to Online Store > Themes > Customize.
2. Open App embeds. Turn on Deal widget, listed with the app name SMART Discounts, and click Save.
3. Back in the app, the home page shows App embed as Active. If it says Inactive, use Turn on app embed.

The widget places itself above Add to cart. To put it somewhere else, add the Bundle widget app block, or use the snippet in the app's settings for page builders. See Turn on the app embed and Place the bundle widget.

Step 5: Remove the old app from your theme

• Embeds and blocks: in the theme editor, turn off the old app's app embeds and remove its app blocks and sections. App blocks and embeds are managed there (Apps in your theme).
• Leftover code: some apps add code to your theme that uninstalling doesn't remove. Shopify suggests checking the app's listing or asking its developer about extra uninstall steps (Uninstalling apps). Apps built as theme app extensions don't edit your theme code (Theme app extensions).
• One widget per page: check that each product page shows only the SMART widget, so shoppers see one set of offers.

Step 6: Turn off the old discounts and check combinations

• Deactivate the old app's discounts for every product SMART now covers, in the old app or in Shopify admin > Discounts.
• Two discounts apply together only when both allow that class in their combination settings. SMART bundles start with Product discounts, Order discounts and Shipping discounts all ticked.
• Two product discounts on the same line item can combine only on Shopify Plus. When discounts can't combine, Shopify applies the best one for the cart (Discount combinations).
• Customers can use up to 5 product or order discount codes and 1 shipping code on one order (Discount combinations).

Step 7: Test with a real cart

1. Open each product with an offer, on desktop and mobile. Check the offer cards, prices and variant pickers.
2. Add each offer with your theme's Add to cart button and check the cart drawer or cart page.
3. Go to checkout and check the total and the discount names. You can stop before paying, or place a test order (Test orders).
4. For a Free gift, reach and leave each tier and watch the gift come and go.
5. Try a discount code next to a bundle, a second market or currency, and removing items until the discount drops.
6. If you sell in store, test at a POS Pro location.

Step 8: Uninstall the old app

• Uninstall only when no live offer or bundle product depends on it.
• Export anything you need first: some apps keep data you can't get back after uninstalling (Uninstalling apps).
• Uninstalling a paid app cancels future recurring charges, but you might still be billed for the current cycle, and charges an app bills outside Shopify aren't cancelled by uninstalling (Uninstalling apps).
• Afterwards, open a product page and the cart again, and look for leftover code or empty blocks.

Edge cases

• Statistics start fresh. SMART's statistics count orders from its own offers, from the day tracking started. Past orders from the old app aren't imported.
• No import tool. Offers are rebuilt by hand; there's no import from other apps.
• Headless or a non-Shopify checkout: SMART needs the Online Store theme embed and Shopify's own checkout.
• Big catalogs: no widget shows on products with more than 250 variants.
