# Bundle discount calculator

Enter your price, your cost per unit and your tiers. For each tier you get the order value, the discount you give away, the price per unit, and the profit and margin left. The break-even discount is the point where a unit earns nothing.

## Formulas

- Order value = price × quantity × (1 − discount %)
- Discount given = price × quantity × discount %
- Price per unit = order value ÷ quantity
- Profit per order = order value − cost per unit × quantity
- Margin = profit per order ÷ order value
- Break-even discount = (price − cost) ÷ price: at this discount each unit earns nothing

Price $28.00, cost per unit $9.00. Break-even discount: 67.9%.

## Before you set your tiers

- Cost per unit is everything a unit costs you: the product, packaging, payment fees and the share of shipping you pay. The more complete it is, the more useful the margin.
- A tier only pays off if it sells units you wouldn't have sold anyway. Compare the profit per order of a tier with the profit of the single unit the shopper came for.
- Shopify applies the discount at cart and checkout. Rounding can move a total by a cent per item; SMART Bundles rounds percentage discounts per item.

## Frequently asked questions

### What discount should a quantity break give?

There is no single right number. Common steps are 10% for 2 and 15–20% for 3, but the limit is your margin: keep every tier above the break-even discount, and check the profit per order against selling one unit.

### Does the calculator include Shopify's fees?

Only if you add them to the cost per unit. Payment fees are a percentage of the order, so add your rate times the price as an approximation.

### Can I set these tiers in SMART Bundles?
