In the app's **Home**, click **Turn on app embed**. Your theme editor opens on **App embeds** with **Deal widget** (listed under the app name SMART Discounts) switched on. Click **Save** there, and Home shows **App embed** as **Active**. ## Why the app embed is needed The app embed is how SMART Bundles reaches your storefront. Without it, no bundle widget shows on your product pages and a Free gift can't add its gift to the cart. It loads the bundle widget's script only while you have a live bundle, and the free gift script only while a Free gift is live. The other discount types (Volume discount, Order goal, Buy X get Y, Shipping discount and Advanced discount) apply in the cart and at checkout and don't need the embed. ## Turn it on from the app 1. In your Shopify admin, open **Apps** and choose **SMART Discounts**. That is the name SMART Bundles App & Upsells has in your admin. 2. On **Home**, find the **App embed** card at the top. While it says **Inactive**, click **Turn on app embed**. The setup guide on Home has the same button under **Turn on the app embed in your theme**. 3. The theme editor of your published theme opens in a new tab, on **App embeds**, with **Deal widget** turned on. 4. Click **Save** in the theme editor. The embed isn't live until the theme is saved. 5. Go back to the app tab. Home checks again every few seconds and switches the card to **Active** on its own. You also get this step when you create a bundle or a Free gift while the embed is off. The dialog **Turn on the app embed in your theme** offers **Turn on app embed** or **Continue without it**, so you can set up the offer first and turn the embed on later. ## Turn it on by hand These are Shopify's own steps for app embeds ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/themes/theme-structure/extend/apps)): 1. In your Shopify admin, go to **Online Store**. 2. Find the theme you want to edit and click **Edit theme**. 3. In the sidebar, click the **App embeds** icon. 4. Turn on the toggle next to **Deal widget** (SMART Discounts). 5. Click **Save**. ## Limits and edge cases - **Published theme only.** The **App embed** status on Home reads your published theme. Turning the embed on in a theme you haven't published doesn't change the status, and shoppers only see the published theme anyway. - **Changing themes.** Shopify says apps aren't active by default in a newly published theme. After you publish a different theme, turn **Deal widget** on in it and save ([Shopify Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/themes/theme-structure/extend/apps)). - **No theme code edits.** Shopify says app embeds work with any theme version. SMART Bundles only reads your theme; it never edits theme files. - **Nothing to set in the embed.** Deal widget has no settings in the theme editor. Where the widget sits is set in the app: see [Place the bundle widget](https://smart-bundles.io/help/getting-started/place-the-bundle-widget). - **The embed alone shows nothing.** A product needs an active bundle that targets it. Why? Check that you clicked **Save** in the theme editor and that you edited your published theme. Home reads only the published theme. If it still says Inactive, reload Home. ### Do I also need to add an app block to my product page? No. With the embed on, the widget inserts itself above Add to cart on product pages. Add the **Bundle widget** block only if you want it somewhere else. The gift is added to the cart by the embed's script, so a Free gift can't add its gift while the embed is off.
