# Shopify Bundles app: its limits, and when another app fits

Shopify Bundles is Shopify's free app for fixed bundles and multipacks. It creates real bundle products whose stock comes from their components, but it doesn't do mix-and-match bundles, subscriptions or pre-orders, bundles inside bundles, or import and export, and a fixed bundle holds up to 30 components. If you'd rather show offers on your existing product pages than create bundle products, a discount-based app like SMART Bundles fits; it doesn't create bundle products or track bundle inventory.

## What Shopify Bundles does

- It's a free first-party app, available on all Shopify plans, for creating fixed product bundles and multipacks in your Shopify admin ([Shopify Bundles](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/bundles/shopify-bundles)).
- Each bundle is a product. You create the component products first; a new bundle starts as **Draft** until you set it to **Active**.
- Bundle stock comes from the components: Shopify divides each component's available stock by the quantity per bundle and takes the lowest result, rounded down. Components that aren't tracked, or that keep selling when out of stock, are left out of the count ([Eligibility and considerations](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/bundles/eligibility-and-considerations)).
- Bundles can be sold on the Online Store, Shop and Shopify POS sales channels, and on headless storefronts ([Shopify Bundles](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/bundles/shopify-bundles)).
- Bundles take discount codes and automatic discounts. A discount aimed at specific products must include the parent bundle product; picking only the components doesn't discount the bundle.
- In the checkout order summary, order notifications and abandoned checkouts, a bundle shows as a nested group: the bundle title and price, then each item and its quantity ([Eligibility and considerations](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/bundles/eligibility-and-considerations)).

## The limits Shopify lists

| Area | What Shopify's pages say |
| --- | --- |
| Components | Up to 30 per fixed bundle, and up to 2,000 units per component |
| Options and variants | At most 3 options and 100 variants per bundle |
| Mix and match | The Shopify Bundles app doesn't support mix-and-match bundles |
| Purchase options | Not compatible with subscriptions, pre-orders or try before you buy, or with the Shopify Subscriptions app |
| Nesting | A bundle can't contain another bundle |
| Bulk work | No import, export or bulk editing of bundles |
| Custom products | Not compatible |
| Exchanges | Bundles can't be used in exchanges, even for an identical bundle |
| Inventory | Tracked as overall stock, not by location |
| Price changes | When a component's price changes, the bundle price doesn't update; you change it by hand |
| Component SKUs | If a component's SKU changes, you delete and recreate the bundle |
| Shipping | No shipping profile of its own; rates come from the components' profiles, and weight from the components |
| Search and Discovery | Bundled products don't appear under option filters |
| Returns | A bundle can't be marked final sale; its return eligibility follows its components |
| Checkout | The store needs the upgraded checkout; checkout.liquid customizations are incompatible. Draft orders might default to an older checkout that doesn't support bundles |

If a store stops being eligible, Shopify sets its fixed bundles to Draft.

> **Numbers you'll see elsewhere** Articles about Shopify Bundles quote different caps. The figures above are the ones on Shopify's own pages on the date shown. Those pages also list Shopify POS as a supported sales channel.

## When Shopify Bundles is the right tool

- You want the bundle to be **its own product**, with its own page, price and place in collections.
- You need **stock calculated from the components**, and nested bundle lines in orders for picking and packing.
- You sell a **fixed set** or a multipack, on the Online Store, Shop, POS or a headless storefront.
- You don't need subscriptions, pre-orders or mix and match on those bundles.

## When a discount-based bundle app fits

A discount-based app doesn't create new products. Shoppers buy your normal products, the app shows the offer on the product page, and Shopify applies a discount in the cart and at checkout. That fits when:

- You want **quantity breaks** on one product ("Buy 2, save 10%") without a multipack product per quantity.
- You want **mix and match**: any 2, 3 or 4 products from a collection at a tiered price.
- You want **Buy X, get Y** on the same product, or **free gifts** added to the cart for the shopper.
- The products sell as **subscriptions**: the widget can offer Subscribe and save using the product's own selling plans.
- You want extras on the product page: **upsell add-ons**, a **gift ladder**, a **countdown**.

The trade-off: no bundle product, no bundle SKU and no bundle inventory. Each product keeps its own stock and its own line in the order.

## Shopify Bundles vs SMART Bundles

| | Shopify Bundles | SMART Bundles |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What it creates | A bundle product | A Shopify discount plus a widget on your product pages; no new products |
| Inventory | Bundle stock from the components | None of its own: each product keeps its stock |
| Bundle types | Fixed bundles and multipacks | **Quantity breaks**, **Buy X, get Y**, **Complete the bundle** (up to 6 products), **Mix and match**, **Alternative product** |
| Mix and match | Not supported | **Mix and match** offer, with an optional product picker |
| Subscriptions | Not compatible | **Subscriptions** extra uses the product's recurring selling plans; the bundle discount covers the first subscription order |
| In the order | A nested group of line items | Each product on its own line |
| Where it works | Online Store, Shop, POS, headless | Online Store themes with the SMART Discounts app embed on. New bundles skip POS sales (**Exclude POS**). No headless |
| Discount codes | Bundles take codes and automatic discounts | Bundles are automatic only; other SMART types can use codes |
| Price | Free | Free |

## Set up a discount-based bundle in SMART Bundles

1. Install the app. In Shopify admin it appears as **SMART Discounts**.
2. Turn on the SMART Discounts app embed, listed as **Deal widget** under **App embeds** in the theme editor, and save the theme.
3. Click **Create new discount** and pick a bundle template, for example **Quantity breaks** or **Mix and match**.
4. On the **Offers** tab, set **Show this bundle on** to **All products** (the default), **Products** or **Collections**, then edit the offers.
5. On the **Settings** tab, check **Active dates**, **Eligibility** and **Combines with**.
6. Click **Create**. The bundle goes live right away (a future start date makes it **Scheduled**), the widget appears above the theme's Add to cart button, and Shopify applies the discount when the cart qualifies.
